Disinfection and sterilization of DURAN®
Disinfection
Glass laboratory equipment that has been in contact with infectious material should be disinfected before further use for the protection of workers.
It can be washed by hand with a cleaner-disinfectant or by machine using physical/thermal methods (at 93°C for 10 minutes as required by BGA) or chemical/thermal methods. If necessary the equipment can then be steam sterilized.
Steam sterilization
Steam sterilization refers to “the destruction or irreversible inactivation of all microorganisms capable of reproduction” (DIN 58 900, Pt. 1, 1986) by means of “saturated steam at a minimum of 120°C and 2 bar” (DIN 58 946, Pt. 1, 1987). The minimum effective application time (destruction time + safety factor) for a sterilization temperature of 121°C is indicated in DIN 58 946, Pt. 2 as: te = 20 minutes. Carrying out the sterilization in accordance with the regulations up to the point of biological protection (DIN 58 946, Pt. 3) is the responsibility of the authorized hygiene specialist.
Sterilization hints:
- Soiled reusable laboratory glassware must be thoroughly cleaned before steam sterilization. Otherwise any residue will bake on during steam sterilization. Microorganisms cannot be effectively destroyed since they are protected by the residue. At the same time any chemicals still adhering to the surface can damage the glass as a result of the high temperatures involved.
- To avoid a build-up of pressure, containers should always be opened.
- Effective steam sterilization can only be ensured if the steam is saturated, and it has unrestricted access to all contaminated points.
