DURAN® cylindrical and conical culture bottles are mainly used for developing cultures to grow media. These are closed with cotton wool plugs, metal caps, glass caps, etc. It is important that an exchange of air to take place while maintaining sterility. The neck finish of the bottles is generally straight (i.e. not a beaded rim). The beaded rim is, of course better for pouring purposes (no drips), but it increases the risk of contamination, since microorganisms can become trapped under the rim.
